GREAT TO MEET YOU

Noelle Stoffel

Being an artist was my destiny.

It all started when …

A s a little girl growing up in Wisconsin, I dreamed of being a professional artist, working for Hallmark Cards—I actually wrote “HallNoelle” or “NoelleMark” on handmade cards I gave to relatives. My parents supported this dream: my dad took art classes with me, and they both drove me to art classes every weekend. Their friends asked me for my paintings and autograph. Later, my parents enrolled me in a high school for the arts. Then, I received scholarships to several art schools, finally choosing the Kansas City Art Institute. I fell in love with Kansas City and its people. Moving to Kansas City and attending KCAI allowed me to fulfill my dream of designing for Hallmark Cards.

After fulfilling the Hallmark dream, it was time to move on to the next one. Showing my work in galleries was something I’d always wanted to do. I’m grateful that a couple of galleries in Milwaukee and Kansas City took a chance on me when I started, and I’ve since worked to expand my exhibitions in a number of others throughout the country.

As an abstract expressionist, I love passionate mark making and have an appreciation for changing color palettes.  I am often a scavenger, inventing new tools out of something that has been discarded. I might pick up something from the street or tear apart fabric from an old dress, and see what I can create from my discovery. It is very satisfying to turn such “trash into treasures.”  Using large brushes is especially freeing for me. Palette knives, spoons, forks, old credit cards, old metal scraps–pretty much anything goes in my book!

And Now …

I create paintings for galleries, for corporate and private commissions, and hold in-person and virtual art exhibitions. I guide people interested in collecting art by helping them figure out their color schemes, and personalizing and beautifying their personal spaces. I’ve sold collections to high profile corporations, been invited to speak to artist groups about the art business, have displayed work in the Symphony Designers’ Showhouse, and hold women’s retreats about mindful art.

Speaking of dreaming …

T here are many ways to find inspiration. As a visual person, I see something and can immediately turn it into a piece of art in my mind. Unique textures, the shapes that clouds form, old doorways, water, seashells, rocks, shadows, and even rusted metal get my imagination going. Someone may look at a pile of construction materials and see a mess, while I see potential.  When traveling, I enjoy gazing out the window of an airplane, or taking a boat ride and getting a different perspective. Cultural differences inspire me to create.

Nature is something that I adore, especially with all the array of colors—fruit, plants, trees, flowers, and sunsets. Something in nature, such as the palette of  changing leaves runs through my mind like a daydream. Painting is something that I find calming and as natural as breathing. I also love words and their meanings, how they connect to the art, and think long and hard before naming my paintings. Having a career doing what I love brings an incredible sense of fulfillment.

Psst …. It’s a little-known secret that I often paint to music.
